This food Looks like The Joker would wear it.

In the cafeteria today at lunch, they had steamed broccoli and purple mashed potatoes. I didn't have any because I've been very bad this week with meals of undetermined caloric value consumed whenever I would get a chance. In other words, I've been eating a lot of junk food and pizza instead of my normal salad for lunch. This needs to stop soon, or I'm headed back above 200 lbs mark. Today was one of the first days this week that I actual made it down to the cafeteria and headed straight for the salad bar, without first checking out the culinary creations. Back at my desk, John returned from his lunch excursion with a meal the required some googling. I had heard of purple skinned potatoes, but never potatoes purple straight through.

I'm interested in trying to cook with some of these crazy potatoes but I think being color blind might lead to some dishes other people would be afraid to eat.  I mean, more than my cooking normally makes people afraid to eat.

Survival

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine…

Knowing the answer to a problem isn't important. Knowing how to find the answer is. Most of my knowledge of how to find answers is here on the intrawebs. So, what's a boy to do when civilization collapses?
Of course, the best way to survive a disaster is to prepare for a disaster, so sites like Disaster Kitchen are good to have on hand as well.
What are the websites you're gonna wish you had a printed hard-copy of, when it comes time, in the words of Wyatt "update your blog, it's embarrassing" McGuire, to eat your neighbors?

Prius Nav Saga: Check The System

On May 27th, I went to Stacie's BBQ. You have to drive through the middle of nowhere and come out the other side to get to Stacie's new house. On the way home, my navigation system didn't turn on, instead it just displayed "check the system." It had gotten pretty hot in the car, and after a few minutes of running the AC, the system kicked back in. I thought the problem was solved… (more…)

Stacie’s Twins.

A month or two ago My friend Stacie gave birth prematurely to 2 baby girls, at 25 weeks into the pregnancy.  Mary and Lily were born weighing only slightly over 1 pound each.  They are now up to around 2 lbs, and are starting to spend more time off the respirator.  Stacie just emailed me today, that she and Kevin are going to be participating in the March of Dimes on 4/30 and are looking accepting donations to help give back for all the help their little girls have received.  You can contribute here.

WiLT: Ah! I thought I was falling!…Zzzz…

You know that falling sensation that wakes you up right as you fall asleep? It's a Hypnic Jerk. I think I do this ever few weeks or so.  Meg says I do this about every night, and it used to freak her out.  I don't know why she's freaked out, she's not the one falling out a window every night.

Niagara Falls

In the Middle of January, Meg and I made an impromptu trip to Niagara Falls, click the falls to check out our snapshots. We arrived just in time to see temperatures drop from 48F, to 9F. I had to buy a Canadia Made hat, lest my ears would have frozen off. It was kinda neat to watch the mist from the falls turn directly into snow. I'm cold just thinking about this trip again. Good times, good times…

  • Leeches? That's Barbarism. Hookworm, On The Other Hand…: Ancylostoma duodenale

British scientists infect themselves with hookworms to cure allergies, asthma and Crone's disease.

    My favorite quote:

Professor David Pritchard and his team at Nottingham University's School of Pharmacy administered different amounts of the hookworms to themselves to prove that it would be safe. Pritchard himself stuck 50 of the larvae onto his skin. 'It was fairly itchy when they first go through the skin,' he admitted. 'After that you don't really notice them.'

What Do You Mean, Monocles Are Out of Style?!?

Me with GlassesLast week I decided it was time to go to the eye doctor and get a checkup, since the last time I was there, I wasn't yet driving. I hadn't really noticed any vision problems, but thought it was time for a health checkup. 20/20 in my right eye, and… hmm, this is odd… 20/50 in my left eye, plus an astigmatism. The doctor was amazed I hadn't noticed any problems. I just don't close my right eye very often, without my left eye following along. Turns out my left eye is a bit of a slacker, wasn't really doing much besides light depth perception duty.

Seeing how I only needed correction on one eye, I asked the fine folks at Lenscrafters if I could see their monocle selection. They don't sell monocles! But these guys do. What have I learned? Monocle prices are almost exactly half the cost of a pair of glasses. Just As You Would Expect.

Next time: Waking up half my optical cortex

I’m Not Dead, Yet.

No, I haven't died. Just had nothing much to say, which then turned into not wanting to say anything because I was in the process of migrating to a new server. Here were are.

I'm also switched to the latest release of wordpress, and trying out the akismet spam filter. So far, it's looking very nice.
