This food Looks like The Joker would wear it.

In the cafeteria today at lunch, they had steamed broccoli and purple mashed potatoes. I didn't have any because I've been very bad this week with meals of undetermined caloric value consumed whenever I would get a chance. In other words, I've been eating a lot of junk food and pizza instead of my normal salad for lunch. This needs to stop soon, or I'm headed back above 200 lbs mark. Today was one of the first days this week that I actual made it down to the cafeteria and headed straight for the salad bar, without first checking out the culinary creations. Back at my desk, John returned from his lunch excursion with a meal the required some googling. I had heard of purple skinned potatoes, but never potatoes purple straight through.

I'm interested in trying to cook with some of these crazy potatoes but I think being color blind might lead to some dishes other people would be afraid to eat.  I mean, more than my cooking normally makes people afraid to eat.

  1. Purple potatoes are all the rage now. Our CSA has been raising them for the last few seasons. The next time we get some I’ll put some pictures up on flickr. The purple potatoes are Andean in origin and are much smaller than a standard russett and even most red potatoes. Coincidentally I went to a local Hispanic festival and they had a Peruvian juice made from purple potatoes. It looked like grape gatorade and tasted like sugar water. Unfortunately I had no camera, so no pics.

  2. Correction, the juice is actually made from purple corn not purple potatoes, woops.

  4. Mom used to grow purple potatoes. We just never told you–being color blind, you couldn’t really tell or something. Or else she was mixing them in your pancakes and we didn’t want you to know. I’m pretty sure that they were purple all the way through. (She grew purple green beans too. But those turn green when you cook them, mores the pity.)

  5. No, the potatoes mom used to grow just had purple skin. My pancakes mainly had carrots in them, unless there are more dastardly things that were done to my breakfasts as a child than has previously been revealed to me.
