No, the potatoes mom used to grow just had purple skin. My pancakes mainly had carrots in them, unless there are more dastardly things that were done to my breakfasts as a child than has previously been revealed to me.

Mom used to grow purple potatoes. We just never told you--being color blind, you couldn't really tell or something. Or else she was mixing them in your pancakes and we didn't want you to know. I'm pretty sure that they were purple all the way through. (She grew purple green beans too. But those turn green when you cook them, mores the pity.)

Purple potatoes are all the rage now. Our CSA has been raising them for the last few seasons. The next time we get some I'll put some pictures up on flickr. The purple potatoes are Andean in origin and are much smaller than a standard russett and even most red potatoes. Coincidentally I went to a local Hispanic festival and they had a Peruvian juice made from purple potatoes. It looked like grape gatorade and tasted like sugar water. Unfortunately I had no camera, so no pics.
