Energy Independence In 10 Years

Shortly after 9/11 I really felt that the Republicans and Democrats dropped the ball. 9/11 should have been a wake up call to make the US energy independant from the Middle East. If we can go to the moon in 10 years, we can generate all our energy needs independently in 10 years time as well. Looks like some Democrats in power have decided it's a good idea (link to a PDF, look for page 9). This proposal is part of a Democrat Innovation Initiative that I think has a lot of merit.

Laser Branded Fish?

Over my lunch break yesterday, I went by Aquarium Center, a fairly large fish store here in Owings Mills. I was interested in seeing if the had any CO2 regulators (they had 2 nice kits, but they appears a tad expensive from what I've seen online.) and I wanted to check out their selection of plants and shrimp (both were very nice.)

Then I saw this:

Tattooed Tetra?

You can't really tell in this picture, but each of those fish is about 5-6 inches long, and covered in a diamond pattern. I'd never seen anything quite like it. it looked like a giant tetra covered in a very detailed pattern. The tag above the tank read that these were "Tatooed Tetras." I thought it was maybe a species I hadn't heard of, and did some googling.

No one's heard of it. What they have heard of are painted tetras and tatooed fish, both of which are very bad for the fish. The article above I linked to mentions that some places have started laser branding fish. that's the only thing I can think of that was done to these fish. I was on my lunch break, so i didn't get a chance to go back and ask if those were natural markings or not, but if they were tattooed or branded that's a shame.

My Father-In-Law’s Been Slashdotted

I've been meaning to write a post about this, but it looks like slashdot beat me to it. Meg's Dad is part of the team working on the STeReO project. A few weeks ago they had a "Family Day" and Meg and I got to go down to APL and see the satellites before they were prepped for launch. Meg's dad has been doing the autonomy testing. His job was to simulate breaking parts of the satellite, or knocking the satellite out of alignment, and seeing how well the onboard AI can figure out where the Sun is, then figure out where the Earth is and then re-establish radio communications with Australia, or a number of other listening posts. Crazy cool geeky stuff.

  • Google Local on Mobile: As if I needed another reason to hump google's leg. If you have a phone that supports java apps and a data connection… open up that crappy wap browser and go to http://google.com/glm. Street maps and Satellite views are available. Still not convinced? Take look at some screenshots. (0)

Scene From Last Weekend At The Library

Meg: Here they have "Chicken Soup for the Dog and Cat Lover's Soul"
Me, looking at some tropical fish books: hmm?
Meg: I wonder if they have a "Chicken Soup for the Bird Lover's Soul?"
Me: …
Meg: I guess that would be sad.
Me: I am so blogging this.

Co2 Review

My qquarium has been having a number of issues lately, I had a pretty nasty infestation of blue green algea (cyanobacteria) which I'm controlling with more frequent water changes, and feeding less. I tried to get a few bottom feeding corys (we got a number of swordtail livebearers at the same time) but none of them did very well in my tank, in fact I think I only have 1 or 2 of the swordtails left.

I think they would have done better if I had more plants and hiding spaces in the tank, because these angel fish are starting to get a bit agressive, but my plants have stopped growing as rapidly as they once did. Also, some of my broader leaf plants are starting to turn a bit yellow and my water pH has gone way up, near 8. The angel fish love it, but that's a little too basic for my purposes as a community tank.

Since CO2 injections will lower pH, promote plant growth, and discourage algae growth, I think that's what I need to do to get the aquarium I see in my head. (more…)

More On Home Rule

In followup to the Home Rule meeting, Mom pointed out a YDR article that goes over some of the thoughts about home rule. At this point, I know so little about what changes are possible with Home Rule, I think we can only benefit by conducting the study. I don't see the downside.
