Color Perception Is Mental. What’s Wrong With My Head?

A recent study at The University of Rochester concludes that people have very different amounts of rods and cones in their eyes, and they are all laid out in different paterns, but that they all can detect the same shade of yellow. I wonder if any of their subjects in the study were color blind. and I'd love for them to have to have people select a color other than yellow. I think the University of Rotchester just said my brain works different than 89% of the population. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Podcasts Ramblings

I started listening to podcasts on my T3 a few weeks ago. QuickNews on the palm makes this very easy when combined with my Edge data connection from T-mobile. I started listening to a few of the big ones: Daily Source Code, 2600's Off The Hook, Marketplace Takeoutand Science Fridays from NPR.

I've also been listening to Cory Doctorow's lastest short story via podcast. The story he just finished was called "After the Siege" and is a Sci-Fi story inspired by the 900 day siege of Leningrad (modern day St. Petersburg) The first few podcasts were done with a horrible built-in laptop mic, but he buys a new microphone about 3 entries in. The story is good enough to put up with the bad sound to start.

But I've found a problem. The variety and timeshifting nature of podcasting is completely ruining me for regular radio. My solution: more podcasts! Yahoo's podcast search is the best I've seen out there. I've found a few more I'm going to try out, but the most interesting one I've found is Chinese language lessons via podcast. I've had a desire to start studying Chinese for a few years now, so I downloaded the first 7 episodes to give it a try. I've listened to the first two, and while I have no idea how to spell (pinyin or characters) I do feel think I'm getting a basic understanding of some vocabulary. While searching, I also found some podcast language lessons for french, but since that's Meg's language of choice, I didn't download those to try any out. I'd rather it just sound exotic and mysterious when she says" What color is this? This is Blue" in french.

Home Rule Meeting

Windsor Township had a meeting tonight on Home Rule. Seeing how I'll be asked to vote on if the township should for a commitee to study and recommend if we should switch to Home Rule, I figured it was a good idea to attend, as I had a number of questions. Inside, you'll find what I've learned.

Questions You May Have About The Prius

The Morning News has a great Q&A about the Prius:

Q: Can you describe the quality of the Prius’s silence when you pull up to a stoplight and the gas engine shuts off entirely?

A: It is the deepest, bone-settled stillness of a kind only experienced by the greatest Zen masters after many decades of study, punctuated by the hammering riffs of System of a Down because the Prius now comes with a six-speaker surround-sound package from JBL, baby!

Dear LazyWeb: What Are Good Web Based File Transfer Interfaces?

I'm working on a project at work to redesigning a 1997-looking application that customers use to securely send files back and forth with us, instead of using plain-text emails. I'm looking for examples of nice clear interfaces. I'd love to find a really clean looking AJAX implementation of something similar to show to my project team for inspiration. I know there are some limitations on what AJAX can do regarding accessing local files, but what's out there, what have you seen that's worth looking at for inspiration?
