  • Smart Choices Made Easy: A few days ago, Meg and I went to the grocery store and right inside the door were were presented with a wall of potato chips:

This wall is approximately 2.3 Megs tall! We stared in awe for a moment. A clerk from the store walked by and said "yeah, it does that" I wonder. Who are the giants who are taking the chips from the top of this shelf? How did they fit in the door? Is there a special "Giants who shop at Giant" door that I am not aware of?

The Wall-O-Potato Chip was made even better by the sign hanging near the top. Here is a closer look:

In case you can't make that out, it says "Smart Choices Made Easy." No comment. (0)

There’s No Need To Be Unhappy

Put in a another good hour long workout at the Y. 10 minutes treadmill warm up, various 2 sets of 20 reps on weights for 30 minutes and then 20 minutes on the treadmill to finish the day.
I think Steven Wright works out at the Y:

Really. He spent 20 minutes walking back and forth in a weight belt, bent over, dragging his arms back and forth over the ground. It was very Steven Wrightish

Finding Neverland

Meg and I went to see Finding Neverland this afternoon. Wow. What a movie. The cast was great: Depp, Winslet, Hoffman. The story was very good, and I learned a bit more about some of the metaphors that appear in the Peter Pan story. While watching the movie, I got a little upset. I've seen the old Mary Martin version of Peter pan a lot, and that darn blinking light that plays Tinkerbell gets me every time. She drinks the poison to save Peter and we have to clap to save her. Make fun all you want, but I get teary eyed every time I see that darn blinkin' light and bell start to fade. It only got worse when… well.. I don't want to give away too much of the movie. I hope it wins some Oscars. It sure deserves them.

Brain Dump

I haven't written anything in a while but don't have anything worthy of a blog entry of it's own. Here comes a brain dump: (more…)

“A Free Groupware system, that’s an awesome idea”

jwz just wrote about the new Hula pen groupware from Novell. and he does a good job of explaining why Open groupware doesn't scratch any itches. or in other words:

So I said, narrow the focus. Your "use case" should be, there's a 22 year old college student living in the dorms. How will this software get him laid?

That got me a look like I had just sprouted a third head, but bear with me, because I think that it's not only crude but insightful. "How will this software get my users laid" should be on the minds of anyone writing social software (and these days, almost all software is social software).

"Social software" is about making it easy for people to do other things that make them happy: meeting, communicating, and hooking up.

Go give it a read.

I Said, Young Man, ‘Cause You’re In A New Town

I have learned the following:

  1. Going out to eat before going to the Y when you get out of work late makes for a shortened workout.
  2. Quickly putting together a bag and changing at the Y results in forgetting to pack sneakers
  3. Treadmills and loafer type slip-on shoes aren't exactly compatible, but it is doable.
  4. Said shoes sure look funny with sweatpants.
  5. When they turn off the lights, they want you to leave.

I'm going to need to do a better job of getting to the Y sooner, because yesterday was a bit frustrating.

I Said, Young Man, Pick Yourself Off The Ground

Went to the Y with Meg, did my regular treadmill-weights-treadmill routine for about 45 minutes. I got up to 6.5 mph on the treadmill, but that didn't last too long. highest I saw my heart rate was 185, but usually it was right at 165. Later in the evening while Meg was doing lesson plans, I took the dog for a walk, doing about 3/4 of a mile. Feeling pretty good, not a beat as the rowing machine or swimming made me. I'll be tackling one or both of those later in the week.
